The Big Texan

So we went to Palo Duro Canyon for our last camping trip of the season, so of course we had to make a trip to The Big Texan for dinner!

This is one of our favorite traditions when we pass through Amarillo, TX.  Such a beautiful place, especially during the Holiday Season!  Its all lit up with Christmas lights and decor everywhere.  Even the giant steer skull gets in on the action!

The atmosphere is big, welcoming, and very rustic.  Walking up into the restaurant you walk along a huge wrap around porch to the front, on some beautiful old wood planks, really bringing the western vibe the moment you walk in.

When you arrive, you can hopefully walk in and be seated, but have no fear if you have a wait.  Spend your time perusing the gift shop, tasting the fudge, playing the sharpshooter arcade, and enjoying the history and photos on the walls.

When its time to be seated, you walk into this huge dinning room with booths lining the walls and long tables stretched out in the middle.  It has two levels, with more seating upstairs.

Yall the food is delicious!  Rolls that taste like clouds and the steaks are juicy and tender.  Its so good, that as soon as it came out I started devouring it without even taking a photo of its yumminess! {blogger fail!}

I did manage to take a photo of their famous 72oz steak challenge for you though!  All you have to do is eat all this in the photo in 60 mins and you get it free!  This is featured in a couple movies as seen here.My favorite thing is that the movie cars features their signature limo!  So fun!!

 I love the history behind how this tradition started.  It all began in 1970 when the founder, Bob Lee held a contest to see who could eat the most steak in one hour.  The winner would earn $5.  The winner ate 4 1/2 one pound steaks, a shrimp cocktail, baked potato, dinner roll, and a salad.  Mr. Lee was so impressed with this that he officially started this 72 oz challenge.

Be sure to take a seat in the giant rocking chair when you visit.  Nothing makes you feel smaller than sitting back in this massive chair and not having your feet hang over.  I think I need one for my front yard…..hmmm….oh darling husband……
